Santa Cruz Real Estate
Residents of Santa Cruz enjoy active lifestyles and countless recreational opportunities that are easily within reach. Water sports such as surfing, sailing, diving, swimming and paddling are popular activities, and it is typical to see others skateboarding, cycling, camping, hiking, and rock climbing. This energetic atmosphere and warm coastal climate contribute to the friendly spirit of the community.
The Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk is one of the oldest amusement parks in the state and registered as a historic landmark. The boardwalk features two classic rides that are still in operation - a wooden roller coaster built in 1924 and a 97-year-old carousel - as well as other rides, games and vendors. The Santa Cruz Wharf provides a closer glimpse at the local wildlife with opportunities for fishing and viewing marine mammals. Humpback whales, sea lions and harbor seals also make an appearance in Monterey Bay. Many diverse shops and restaurants also dot the wharf - choose cuisines from fresh seafood and wine to a burger and beer all while watching the sun set over the water. More shopping can be found in the city's downtown area, referred to by locals as the Pacific Garden Mall.
For surfers, some of the best big waves in the world can be found along the coast of "Surf City." Steamer Lane and Pleasure Point create the perfect conditions for experienced riders, and the area is no longer a local secret. Several surfing contests each year draw participants from all over the world to Santa Cruz including the O'Neill Cold Water Classic at Steamer Lane. Visitors may also run into surfers at the Santa Cruz Surfing Museum at Steamer Lane. The museum is housed in the Mark Abbott Memorial Lighthouse and showcases 100 years of surfing history in Santa Cruz.
This coastal city is especially well known as a playground for skateboarding and surfing enthusiasts. Santa Cruz boasts the country's first public skate park, designed by architect Ken Wormhoudt more than 25 years ago. A new skate park opened recently and was named in honor of the architect and designed by Ken's son, Zach Wormhoudt. The Ken Wormhoudt Skate Park features one of the only two full pipes in Northern California.
If that isn't enough, Santa Cruz is a haven for all golfers, whether they prefer swinging at a ball or throwing a disc. The Pasatiempo Golf Club, which opened in 1929, features an 18-hole championship course located on the hills overlooking Monterey Bay. This challenging and breathtaking course is complimented by a clubhouse swimming pool, tennis courts and beach club. For disc golf players, the top-rated De Laveaga Disc Golf Course consists of 18 holes with 4x4 posts as the targets. This natural course often hosts PDGA tournaments, including the annual Masters Cup.
With all Santa Cruz has to offer, residents have countless options when it comes to real estate. From beach and luxury homes along the waterfront, to quaint cottages and charming condos in unique neighborhoods, Santa Cruz real estate appeals to professionals, retirees and students attending the University of California-Santa Cruz.
